Curfew in Maldivian capital
20/09/2003 20:31 - (SA)
Colombo - A night curfew was imposed on the capital of the Maldives on Saturday after unprecedented street rioting that followed a man's death in prison, residents said.
Armed police patrolled the streets of Mali, the capital island of the archipelago, after mobs set fire to several vehicles and government buildings, residents said.
They said the authorities ordered the island's 80 000 residents of the island to stay indoors until Sunday morning, adding that civil unrest was unheard of on Mali. - Sapa-AFP
